Dr. Phrampus is the Director of the Peter M. Winter Institute for Simulation, Education and Research (WISER) and  Associate Professor in the Departments of Emergency Medicine and Anesthesiology of the University of Pittsburgh School Of Medicine.

 

Dr. Phrampus earned a bachelor degree in biology from Old Dominion University, and an M.D. from Eastern Virginia medical school. He completed residency training and board certification in Emergency Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh.

 

 He is a member of the Academy of Master Educators of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and an inaugural fellow of the Society for Simulation in Healthcare.

Dr. Phrampus is a member of the Quality Patient Care Committee of the UPMC Board of Directors and serves as the Medical Director for Patient Safety for the twenty-hospital health system with over 63,000 employees. The UPMC Health System is ranked #12 in the United States by US News and World Report and appears on their Honor Roll for over a decade. Paul lectures widely as a healthcare simulation systems expert.

Paul has been leading WISER since 2015. WISER's  main campus and eight satellite centers provide simulation and educational infrastructure serving the UPMC Health System and the University of Pittsburgh’s Schools of Health Sciences WISER has been accredited by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare in all content areas including teaching, assessment, research and systems integration; one of the first centers in the world to be accredited in all areas.

From 2005 to 2010 he led a five-year project entitled Fort Sam 68 Whiskey Combat Medic Medical Simulation Training Quantitative Integration Enhancement Program US Govt funded at $1.6 Million for the US Army. He has consulted  for United States Navy  Air Force conducting evaluation of healthcare simulation efforts and faculty development training.

Dr. Phrampus has overseen a highly successful method of curriculum development at WISER that employs structured collaboration between subject matter experts and simulation/education experts. The result is an expert-curriculum, competent-facilitator model of delivery. He is a co-author of the world renowned faculty development course for simulation based education called Improving Simulation Instructional Methods (iSIM) which has been taught in over fourteen countries.

 

Dr. Phrampus serves in a leadership role in national simulation efforts through program committee leadership for the Society for Simulation in Healthcare and serves on the editorial board of the journal Simulation in Healthcare. He has previously chaired the International Meeting for Simulation in Healthcare, which is the largest multidisciplinary simulation meeting in the world. He was the 2013 President of the Society for Simulation in Healthcare which has over 3,500 members world-wide.

 

Dr. Phrampus has traveled extensively lecturing and conducting simulation workshops, demonstrations and assisting in proliferation of successful simulation start-up programs. In addition to the United States his education efforts have included Australia, China, Hong Kong, Tibet, India, South Korea, Thailand, The Philippines, Singapore and Germany.
