Dr. Issenberg’s career focus has been in: 1) the research, development, implementation, and evaluation of simulation and computer-based teaching systems, 2) the development and evaluation of simulation-based outcome measures to assess student and physician competencies, and 3) the development and implementation of faculty development programs for teaching and research.

Dr. Issenberg leads an international consortium of clinicians, nurses, educators and engineers from 14 medical centers. The consortium published multi-center studies that have shown the effectiveness of simulation technology to teach and assess clinical skills. Dr. Issenberg has authored or co-authored more than 125 publications, books, book chapters and e-learning programs on the development, use and evaluation of simulation systems in medical education.

Dr. Issenberg chairs the Topic Review Group on Simulation for the Best Evidence Medical Education (BEME) collaboration. BEME conducts systematic reviews of healthcare education to define the best available evidence. The 2005 BEME publication has been cited more than 1,300 times, and is recognized as the second most cited publication in a medical education journal since 1900 (Azer SA. Acad Med 2015;90(8):1-15).
