Professor Benjamin W Berg MD was born in London UK, and received his MD degree from the Tufts University School of Medicine, Boston Massachusetts in 1983.

Dr. Berg is Professor of Medicine (Critical Care ) and  Founding Director of the Society of Simulation in Healthcare certified SimTiki Medical Education Simulation Center at the University of Hawaii, John A Burns School of Medicine.

 

He is board certified in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Disease, and Critical Care Medicine and is a  Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator (CHSE). Dr. Berg is the Director of the SimTiki International Fellowship in Simulation Based Educational Methods, a 1-2 year post graduate program for professional healthcare scholars.

Dr. Berg completed a 26 year career in the US Army, retiring in 2005 at the rank of Colonel. He served as a Flight Surgeon, Pulmonary and Critical Care specialist,  Internal Medicine Residency Director, Director of Clinical Investigation, and ACGME Designated Institutional Official (DIO) for 14 residency programs.

Dr. Berg's simulation based education program development work at SimTiki and other centers has included curricular integration of multi-modality simulation, including task trainers, standardized patients, virtual environments, and high technology simulator based techniques, and integration of distance learning methodologies for simulation based interactive education

Dr. Berg has developed nationally recognized assessment tools for teamwork training, and has over 60 peer reviewed publications and textbook chapters. His active research interests include international healthcare education, inter-professional education (IPE),  simulation, faculty development methods, educational assessment ,patient safety, mastery learning, and healthcare technology integration. Dr. Berg is the author of the Fundamental Simulation Instructional Methods (FunSim) introductory faculty development course. FunSim has been translated into multiple languages and has been delivered more than 30 times for academic and hospital based educators in Japan. He holds an appointment as Senior Consultant at the University of the Ryukyus,  ChuraSim Clinical Simulation Education Center, Okinawa Japan.

Ben has conducted funded simulation research in distance learning, teamwork, telemedicine, and debriefing, having been been awarded over $3 million dollars in total research funding.

Dr. Berg has provided consulting services and served as an invited speaker for local, regional, national, and international clients and academic institutions. He has shared his expertise in China, Japan, the Republic of  Korea, Thailand, India, Saudi Arabia, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Northern Ireland, and Germany
 

Dr. Berg serves as a consultant for multiple organizations in an advisory capacity for development projects in simulation based education methods, simulation program development, hospital safety programs, team training, simulation device development, and program accreditation.
